Utilizing technology within the construction industry is something companies can no longer ignore. From January 25-29, Midwest Build Week held their virtual construction and design event which brought together thousands of industry professionals to learn about the latest trends and developments across the built environment. P. Agnes’s own Project Estimator, Matt DeBasio, participated in a panel discussion on Harnessing the Power of BIM & Digital Construction along with panelists from Pepper Construction, Environmental Systems Design, Inc. (ESD), W.E. O’Neil Construction, and Mortenson.

The panel discussion explored how BIM, reality capture, and digital processes in construction have evolved in different markets, what these terms mean for different project roles, and what value is realized for a variety of project stakeholders. The panelists shared their companies’ recent history on how and why these tools and processes have been implemented, why education is more important than ever, and some prognostication on the opportunities these technologies will present for the AEC industry in 2021 and beyond.

One of the key takeaways from the discussion is that construction companies are becoming their own technology company in a sense. Collecting data, data management, and delivering to clients is becoming essential. Matt noted that reality capture will become a key differentiator in 2021 and beyond. Specifically, he sees massive value in providing clients with a digital version of the facility once a construction project is turned over, and educating them how to leverage this to save on operations and maintenance costs over the building’s lifecycle.
